Help the Abu Ghali Family Escape Genocide
United States
Hi friends,
My name is Maeve and I’ve created this fundraiser for Wesam Abu Ghali. He is a husband and father to four children from Rafah, Gaza. He’s been working tirelessly to raise money to help his family survive the genocide they’ve been enduring in their homeland for almost 2 years now. His goal is to raise money to cover evacuation costs, but despite months and months of fundraising, Wesam has had to use all the donations he’s received just to pay for food and basic necessities to survive, due to the near total blockade and insane inflation.
With talks of a potential truce, Wesam wants to be prepared to evacuate with his family as soon as the crossing is opened, so I’ve created this fundraiser to help cover those evacuation costs. In the past, when the Rafah crossing was open, the price to leave Gaza was $5,000 per adult and $2,500 per child. For the Abu Ghali family, this would be $20,000, but there are no certainties. It could be much more than this. And on top of those prices, just for Wesam to be able to withdraw the money that is sent to him from this fundraiser, he must pay a middleman in Gaza who charges around 50% of the amount that is desired to be withdrawn.
As we all know, any ceasefire arrangement, even if achieved, is incredibly precarious and the occupation may violate it at any time, so it’s imperative to help the family reach their goal ASAP, so they can leave right away.
Before the start of Israel’s genocidal campaign, Wesam was a primary school teacher, but his home in Rafah was bombed and destroyed completely, forcing his family to live in a makeshift tent which has already been destroyed once before by strong winds. They’ve been forcibly relocated multiple times during the genocide. This displacement didn’t start t
